Mel’s Diner revs up its Saturday breakfast
Bonita Springs, Fla. – The smell of fresh, buttery biscuits and the crackle of sizzling bacon is enough to get just about anyone out of bed, and since Mel’s Diner added a classic car club to its Saturday morning breakfast, the restaurant chain has become an even friendlier family hangout.

Founded in 1989, Mel’s is a traditional family diner setting that hosts the laid-back, mouth-watering, family-friendly home cooking, all made from scratch. Though the food itself is enough to keep plenty of diners coming back morning after morning, Mel’s thought more interaction was necessary to fully serve its community. Thus, the Dunlop Breakfast Club was born.

Started in May of this year, the car club allows car enthusiasts to spend Saturday mornings gazing at antiques and dream cars, chatting about memorable car moments and enjoying a delicious, home-cooked meal, all in the relaxed Mel’s environment. Each of the breakfast club’s gatherings take place at one of the 10 Mel’s locations. The three-hour event kicks off at 9 a.m. and includes:

Car shows featuring classic and high-end automobiles
Demonstrations by experts offering proper car care and repair tips
Speeches and meet-and-greets with racing legends, auto executives and high-end car mechanics
Displays of mechanical ingenuity by area experts

Founded by Chris Karakosta in San Carlos, FL in 1989, Mel’s Diner, affectionately known as “Southwest Florida’s kitchen,” originally set out to mimic the look and feel of Karakosta’s first eatery, the Chicago-based family style diner, Dimitri’s. Before Mel’s, Karakosta owned and operated two other establishments in the southwest Florida area, the upscale steak-and-seafood spot, The Green Onion, and Stevie Tomato’s Sports Page, one of the region’s first sports bars.

Currently, the chain boasts 10 locations throughout southwest Florida and plans to add at least four more stores by 2007, including spots in Naples, Cape Coral and two in Sarasota. While its reach may be widespread, each store continues to pride itself on the family friendly service, high value and made-from-scratch comfort foods that made the original location such a success.
